Abstract
Considering the structure and types of environmental monitoring, it is first
necessary to differentiate the concepts of "environmental monitoring" and
"environmental research". These types of environmental activities are equally
important and complementary, but they have completely different goals. Monitoring is
the operational monitoring of the environmental situation. The purpose of
environmental research is to study the processes occurring in the environment. The
basis of environmental management of any area is environmental monitoring, but in
urban areas, traditional approaches to the study of ecosystems are ineffective. As a rule,
their use is reduced to the identification of individual sources of pollution. However,
the urban ecosystem is a complex system with different parts of the purpose, which are
in the relationship of interconnection and interdependence. Therefore, monitoring of
the ecological condition of the city should be based on a systematic approach to the
study of the problem [2; 6; 14; 15].
