Abstract
Modern requirements for the quality of education lead to the formation of new requests for the competencies of a specialist (basic knowledge, abilities, skills, experience).
In the practice of Ukrainian education, the competence-based approach is considered as one of the most promising in terms of assessing the effectiveness of professional training of students, according to which the criteria of readiness for professional activity are competence and the competencies included in it.
From these positions, cartographic literacy is an integral part of the professional competence of geography students, one of the main professional competencies. Therefore, serious attention is paid to its formation at the university, especially in the classes on «Cartography with the basics of topography with educational practice».
